David, this article has caused me great pain!!

I have had to read it several times before commenting because it made me think hard. First pain. I also had to face up to the realisation that I too was an 'old fart'. Second pain.

Now to the real pain. The diagnosis is right but it's not an epidemic. It is not as universal as you seem to suggest.

We are suffering from a deficit of leadership - in some places. You say; "People don’t seem to care anymore. They don’t have the drive. They don’t have the joy. It’s just a job ..." But equally, there are many 'young farts' that are more engaged than I was in my early career. They bring more creativity, are more challenging and show more leadership, even though they aren't leaders in an org chart sense. It's wrong to tar all with the same brush.

As you say, "we are wrong in thinking that the new generations are different". They are not the problem. You rightly place the blame at the door of the people that run organisations badly. Yes, there are some senior leaders that are too focused on looking rather than doing good. It was ever thus. The main problem is the 'old farts' that are still around and think the world has not changed. It was ever thus. It's the 'old farts' that having climbed the corporate ladder think that wielding power is their job. It was ever thus.

I see young people start businesses driven by a burning passion to make the world a better place and build something meaningful. I see young people working hard to make an impactful contribution to their company. I see companies, even very large ones, rethinking what an organisation is, how it works and how they can unleash people's passion and creativity and delivering stunning improvements in financial performance.

What you describe is not a new problem. My father's generation blamed the lack of war experience for a casual attitude to work and life of the people who are now your 'old farts'.

The young people of today we rail against aren't wrong or different, save for one thing. They are less willing to play the game we 'old farts' created and in too many cases, still perpetuate.

Good on them!

PS Old fart is not age related: it's mindset. At least that's what I'm clinging onto!
